CHOOSING AN ONLINE COLLEGE

When you were first shopping around for colleges when you graduated from highschool, the process was fairly straightforward. You visited schools that interested you and toured their campuses, talked to students and alumni, and you developed an overall feeling for each individual institution. With online education, the process is not quite so simple. Which colleges should you take a look at? What discipline should you pursue, what type of degree should you study for?

Just like campus oriented colleges, online colleges have different reputations, so you need to conduct some thorough research before selecting a particular program. It is important to pursue an oline college that is well established. You may want to talk to your employer's Human Resources department and inquire as to which online colleges they believe to be the best, which have the most well respected degree programs. The Accreditation the online college has can be very important. There are online schools with the same Accreditation as state universities, and other schools have more regional accreditations. For study at the masters and doctoral level, accreditation can be important. However, if the area of study you want to pursue is in a new field, such as Web Design, the program and not the accreditation can be more important.

What discipline you pursue is largely dependent upon your own particular interests or career aspirations. Make sure the online curriculum is pertinent to what your ultimate goal is. Online education can be a great way to gain the validation of a higher educational level that can increase your credentials and jump start your career and prepare you for job promotion. Or, a certificate program can increase your skill level and prompt a pay raise for the extra skills gained.

When you choose the right combination of online college, discipline and degree program you'll derive a lot from your overall educational experiece. Online education offers the utimate in flexibility and freedom, and the vast majority of those who pursue online education are glad they did so. Not just because of the experience of learning and broadening their horizons, but also because
of the career opportunities that continued education opens up for them.
