FREQENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Distance Learning effective?
Many educators ask if distant students learn as much as students receiving traditional face-to-face instruction. Research comparing distance education to traditional face-to-face instruction indicates that teaching and studying at a distance can be as effective as traditional instruction, when the method and technologies used are appropriate to the instructional tasks, there is student-to-student interaction, and when there is timely teacher-to-student feedback. (Moore & Thompson, 1990; Verduin and Clark, 1991)

What is an online college?
An online college is an accredited educational institution that offers course work to enable students to earn specific degrees. Usually all coursework is offered and completed online, though some of schools are now offering combinations of online and in class instruction. For example, some online colleges offering doctoral programs now require attendance for several weekends throughout of the year.

Is a degree earned from an online college any less real than from a traditional college?
Degrees earned from online colleges are just as valid as a traditional college degree. Speak with your Human Resources Department to get information on which online colleges they view as being topnotch.

Will I be any less educated if I get an online degree rather than a regular degree from a four year college? This is largely up to the effort exerted by the individual student, regardless of where they are studying for a degree. There are several online universities that have associations with well known schools such as Columbia, Stanford and University of Pennsylvania that invigorates their curriculum.

How long does it take to earn a degree online?
Typically, a bachelors degree will take 10 months to 3 years, depending on the school and the rigor of the degree program. This also depends on the pace the student keeps in pursuing his degree.

How do I know which online college to apply to?
Determine what area of study you want to pursue. Once you have narrowed that down, begin researching what online colleges have degrees in that area, the requirements, cost and benefits of each program. Be sure that the program you choose is a good match for your own goals and priorities. Many online colleges have various areas of study they are focus on such as business, technology, nursing, vocational training, etc. If you need to research the school's accreditation see the following web page for additional information on accreditation. University Accreditation in the United States for further information on the proper accrediting bodies for college education.

How is Distance Learning delivered? A wide range of technological options are available to the distance educator. Typically instruction is delivered via:

Computer assisted instruction - the computer is used to present lessons with supplemental readings in textbooks

Voice - technologies such as the telephone and audio conferencing

Video - instuctional videos and one way or two way video conferencing may be used

Data - computers send and receive information electronically. Many times, exams are administered in this way. Also, assignments may be submitted via email or through data links.
